Art used to be about beauty. Now, having deconstructed the idea of beauty as patriarchal, white supremacists, cis-normative (etc.) all that is left is shock i.e. bodily fluids everywhere.

Yeah...today I've visited a regional folk museum somewhere in Europe and seen hand made pieces of furniture dating from the late 19th century. Beautiful in their functionality, slight imperfections and minimal decorative flourishes which would vary and display the unique signature of the particular craftsman's work.

Then I went in a 12th century cathedral and lost myself craning my neck up at the stained glass...which is the entire point..

The cathedral is an experiential artwork intended to help you set things in perspective and remind you of your place in the universe.

I guess art reflects the stage a civilisation is at...the great cathedrals going up analogous to the infancy of Western Christian civilisation. The sort of 'art' you're describing Kate of body fluids and half baked ideologies emanating from the gibberish ravings of Butler et al is analogous to someone in the final stages of alzheimers or similar degenerative illness / condition. A fitting metaphor for a rapidly collapsing civilisation.

I think that is an apt metaphor Trent! It certainly feels like some sort of derangement. I was in Italy a couple of weeks ago and had a similar experience in the many magnificently sublime cathedrals. I know everyone talks about civilisation collapsing but I cannot help but hope there is true beauty in the ruination to see us to whatever is next....

Thanks Kate. I got out of my shed at The Arches a few times, I never even knew it had a theatrical element.

This was a very sad read. I’m guessing that Scottish drama is still marooned up the gender & CRT creek? I’m also guessing that a good few of the most vulnerable and oppressed grew up in good homes before their career successes?

The Arches was huge for the club scene. Loved it!! That’s so funny (and unsurprising!) you didn’t know they did theatre. Scottish theatre is SATURATED in CRT/gender. And yes no one continues in the arts past their early 20s unless they have come from money/stability. They can sofa surf for so long before reality determines they need something more stable.
