Scottish Government is running *another* consultation this month for parents to respond to: Schools - religious observance and religious and moral education.

We still don’t know the outcome of the Relationships Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) from Autumn 2023. Many parents (and organisation) spent a good amount of time combing through the obtuse academic language spread out over 28 pages of that ‘wonderful’ project (sigh). Of course, there were general themes that could be easily predicted related to trans ideology, hyper sexualised content, and removal of parents rights. Where are they now? Anyone knows.
We can see Colin Morrison promoter of ‘sexual rights for children’, architect of RSHP and one of the founders of the children’s parliament has released his report related to ‘THE CHAT’.

As far as I can tell, THE CHAT was a wee pet project for Colin who invited parents to come and talk to him about sex. Because no one likes talking to strange men about their sex lives more than Scottish parents! Except… not.
Only 218 parents from across Scotland participated face to face in the sessions (or via zoom) (would love to know how much of our tax monies went to that!). In addition we are told 3676 parents did the survey. Except we don’t really know. As I know some (naughty) individuals did it two or three times as there were no controls for the online form. DEFINITELY NOT ME. (wink wink). In all seriousness though some muppet in the outer regions of Mongolia could have done the survey 3676 times with different emails and we’d be none the wiser…..
Which makes the gathering of data useless. But even if it was good data gathering 3676 parents makes up .46% of parents in Scotland. (and 218 parents makes up .003% of parents in Scotland)
Which means over 99% of parents did not respond. There is NO WAY they can justify their findings as being statistically representative. Not least there are countless independent studies that indicate that these comprehensive relationship and sex programs are pretty useless. Like
here and Family Education Trust here and here and here to name a few….). There are even some significant studies (in particular in light of the grooming gangs- that show they bring harm like here)It is worth noting here that the Scottish Youth Parliament released a statement stating *they* were going to release a report shortly on 11 December 2024. Going by the ‘diversity’ push for membership I do wonder how relatable their findings are going to be. (ie. recruiting membership who will parrot a pre-determined message) Watch this space….. (also as noted that Colin Morrison has alignment with this organisation which hardly makes it’s findings neutral)
Which brings us back to our latest consultation: '“Religious Observance and Religious and Moral Education”. Most will not mind this thinking ‘it has nothing to do with them’. But that’s where they are wrong. Those who have been paying attention will see this centres ‘children’s rights’ front and centre. The target for this infraction however: parents. So: same old same old.
It is no secret that anti-Catholicism (and anti-parents helloooo Named Person scheme which fell down not on principle but on GDPR…) is so rampant in Scotland as to be almost a sport. That this consultation seeks to undermine Catholic education will delight many in the fray (looking at you oh so ‘tolerant’ Humanists and Scottish Greens….). But not unlike the abortion zone bill, Scottish government has chosen an easy target that could have much larger repercussions and had very little to do with the matter as presented..
As this lady often states ‘good laws are not proclamations of virtue’.
Oh but Scotland is notoriously bad at making good laws. As written about in Spiked - harassment outside of abortion clinics is exceedingly rare. That law was never really about that. What it succeeded in doing however was adding another spoke to Scotland’s clamp down on civil liberties as evidenced in our Hate Crime legislation as written about by
. This new legislation sets a precedent for ‘thought crime’ as even someone praying whilst walking down a street within the restriction zone, could be criminalised. If your home is within the boundary and you are pro-life and choose to have a gathering of individuals to discuss… how to support mothers, you could also be criminalised. And so on and so forth. It’s where the law could be exploited at the edges that often matters the most. Many have pointed out (rightfully in my opinion) that the UNCRC (United Nations Rights of the Child) Rights Respecting Schools Project is very religious (ironically). It has never escaped me how the moral language used is not so different to language one finds in Catholic teachings: that one is meant to be ‘respectful’ and ‘do the right thing’. However, in this instance only the child’s experiences count (so they say). Catholic social teachings in contrast are based upon 2000 years of philosophical interrogation - which have laid the groundwork for our current liberal and universal education system, not least the education of the poor and females. (anything UNCRC tries to do Jesus does better: FACT). That Catholic social teachings speak quite comprehensively to the parents being the preeminent guide and protector of children is also worth noting.
Let us reiterate AGAIN for those short of hearing. Child voice is a lie. Children will defer to adults. That is evolutionary. Parents are (statistically/factually/actually) the best advocates for their children. The state is a terrible parent. Beyond terrible. Can we learn from children? Of course. Are they actually our teachers? Would we ask a child to swap places with a brain surgeon or a tree surgeon for that matter? Of course not. All in its own time.
That the UNCRC program itself is toothless is evident in this wee bit of bumpf they have provided to children in the Young Scots magazine…
Child sees broken swing. What does child do? Ignore it? No report it to his/her parent so that his/her parent can email MSP to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Funny enough we had a broken swing in our local park for YEARS. Many many many emails later with the force of several parents - one day - miraculously - it got fixed. Yet what these children are being given is a false sense of agency. The danger of UNCRC however lies not in how a child *notices* broken things in local play spaces but more significant issues. Like…. Catholic education.
It is no secret that Catholic schools are one of the last bulwarks against trans ideology in Scotland. (that’s not to say it doesn’t get in sometimes, a matter for another post). Already we see UNCRC being weaponised to allow for self-id as our favourite friend (she says wryly) LGBT Youth Scotland along some other formal bodies have been regularly mis-representing Article 8 for some time: Identity.
Below are posters in the window of the Scottish Children’s Reporter in Glasgow. That the organisation responsible for Care Experienced children is 1. promoting trans ideology (through presentation of progress flag) and 2. LGBT Youth Scotland (direct links to abuses of children in the care experienced system) is more than alarming.
It seems to me the UNCRC is seeking to mediate and determine every personal interaction our children have. Which is why the latest consultation is so worrying to me. As most will know I am a Catholic parent and my child is at a Catholic school, so I do have direct interest in this topic. That said I see the wider implications.
I think one of the most telling issues of this consultation is that there is no problem with children being ‘forced’ to have RE. Scottish Catholic schools in particular (given their alignment within the state system) have a long history of *actual* inclusivity within their walls. They have learned to accommodate non-Catholic children, for example, for decades. No child is ‘forced’ to participate in mass, or prayers. As one teacher said to me ‘Catholic children learn through Catholicism, non-Catholic children learn about Catholicism’.
What this consultation seeks to do is to add another level of bureaucracy for teachers to manage wherein they need to ‘prove’ the child’s rights are being upheld, that they (the children) choose to participate in the religious education. In my earlier post I cited the study “-A Significant Events Approach to Children's Rights with Children Under Three in Education and Care:” In it nursery teachers are told that pre-verbal children must have their ‘rights’ upheld and that the teachers need to prove (via bureaucratic tick boxes that are to be submitted to the UN) that how ‘Two year old Jenny crying is a reflection of her rights being withheld’. Not because she is two.
Professor James Conroy, a vice-principal of Glasgow University where he is Professor of Religious and Philosophical Education expressed doubts about the real motives behind the Scottish Government’s Consultation paper.
“There is a cohort of anti-religious and anti-Catholic civil servants in the Scottish Government,” said “who have become obsessed with imposing a cultural agenda on our schools which has little to do with closing the attainment gap or improving basic literacy and numeracy skills.”
-Church claims proposals could erode Catholic identity” Kevin McKenna, The Herald 15 December 2024
It is clear to me that this consultation has little to do with the facilitation of children thriving in Scotland and more about further embedding the new secular religion of UNCRC through which we get gender ideology, sexualisation of our children (see latest on ‘sex-work’ legislation going through and continuing consent model), buying an selling of bodies (surrogacy) and suicide industries (seek the euthanasia bill) to name a few….
Up until this point Catholic schools have offered some resistance to all of these. The cynic in me might think there are ulterior motives at play as easy wins allow bad players to gain access to managing and determining more elements of our children’s lives. And as I said previous (all together now!) GOOD LAWS ARE NOT PROCLAMATIONS OF VIRTUE. Is it just possible that our government is using the ruse of law to instill a new moral framework? What if it was never about justice in the first place but about installing a new trans human technocratic state ruled by AI and robots?
thinks so.In any case we are wise to keep our children close and make our voices heard. Consultation deadline closes 26 January 2025.

- love it
Well done Kate
It always used to be dubious Labour councillors wanting to shut down Catholic schools to be “anti-sectarian”. Now it’s the Wokists and child catchers. They need to mind out, Scottish Catholics are hardly defenceless!
